Learn how to set up a Nalgene pouch and poo bag pouch on your tactical belt for efficient hydration and waste cleanup during K9 training or patrol.

Quick answer

Mount the Nalgene pouch on your support-side hip and the poo bag pouch on your trail belt's forward webbing to keep hydration and cleanup gear accessible without interfering with your duty setup.

Why position matters for K9 handlers

When you're training or working a patrol dog, every piece of gear on your belt competes for space and access. The Nalgene pouch holds a 32oz bottle that you'll reach for during breaks, while the poo bag pouch is needed during or after every elimination. Placing them on opposite sides of your belt prevents one from blocking the other and keeps both within easy reach.

Both pouches use laser-cut Salute nylon and attach via PALS webbing, so they mount securely without shifting. The low-profile design of the poo bag pouch means it won't snag on brush or gear when you're moving with your dog.

Step-by-step setup

  1. Attach the Nalgene pouch to your support-side hip: Thread the dual-strap system through two rows of PALS webbing on your Trail Belt, positioned on the hip opposite your holster or primary tool. Cinch the straps tight so the bottle doesn't wobble. Common mistake: mounting the pouch too far forward, which can dig into your thigh when you squat or kneel.
  2. Mount the poo bag pouch on forward webbing: Choose a PALS column near the front of your belt, on the same side as your support hand. Slide the pouch's webbing tabs through the slots and secure them. The pouch should sit flat against the belt. Check that the pouch doesn't overlap with your Nalgene pouch or any other accessory when you bend at the waist.
  3. Load the poo bag pouch with a fresh roll: Insert a standard roll of poop bags into the pouch so the first bag's perforation is easy to grab. The laser-cut opening should let you pull one bag at a time without tearing the roll. Avoid overstuffing the pouch — a single roll fits best, and a second roll can make it hard to access quickly.
  4. Test your draw and rehydration access: With your dog on leash, practice reaching for the Nalgene bottle with your support hand and pulling a bag from the poo bag pouch with the same hand. Adjust the pouch positions if either motion feels awkward or blocked by your dog's leash. If the leash handle catches on the poo bag pouch, slide the pouch one PALS column toward your centerline.
